I was absolutely blessed this morning to swim a 5000 yard challenge workout with good friends from several teams. We had Jim Gloystein, Susie Powell, Sarah Larroque, Jimmy & Cat Nam, Terry Powers, Shari Cruse, Nicole Coll, Lynn Forsey, Erica Sutherland, Kate Thorp and Shannon O’Hare take up the challenge. Not only did we all do the 5000 yards (most yards that almost all of us had ever done), about half of us added on another 350 yards to make an even 3 miles!

Swimming is about fitness and friendships – friendships that span the years and the teams. It really doesn’t matter what team you are affiliated with. We proved that today with 5 teams represented in today’s challenge. We had swimmers from Swymnuts, Marin Pirates Masters, Rolling Hills Mud Sharks, Rolling Hills Swim Fit, and one unattached.

We hooted and hollered our way through the workout, which was such a blast. Definitely better than trying to do this solo! We had baggies of cut up oranges, and baggies of trail mix to keep us going. Each set of 5 x 100s was different, and we regrouped after each 5 x 100 set so that we would send off at the same time. We are thinking of trying to do this perhaps monthly with a goal to reach 7500 yards later this year and then 10,000 yards in the late fall.

Here are some pictures we took during and after the workouts. Congrats to all the swimmers for this terrific accomplishment!

We did it!

We did it!

5000+ yards. Yowza! And we can still lift our arms.

I think Nicole, waving the fin, can do another 5000 yards.
