Six of our lady Swymnuts challenged themselves to do something none of them had ever done. Four took on the 5K challenge and two took on the 10K challenge at Lake Del Valle. Neither of these swims is for the faint hearted. 5K or even 10K in a pool is pretty darned challenging – now try this in open water where you have no walls and nowhere to rest other than treading water. You have a mass of competitors, buoys that are hard to see, and mind numbing time to think about nothing! Sounds fun, right? Well actually, it is in a way. There is tedium, there is fear, but there is also excitement. And when you finish, there is pure joy and an incredible sense of accomplishment.

So impressed with a job well done for our six strong ladies: Susie Powell, Erica Sutherland, Rachel Craft, Claudia Hermann, Cokie Lepinski and Mary Piel! We hope even more of you join us next year. We did learn that the 10K is really for those who are pretty darned speedy and have endurance. The cut off for the 10K swim is a very brisk 3 hours and 30 minutes. That means you have to be able to maintain around a 33-minute mile to make it. Erica and Susie were our 10K swimmers. They had been told that if they got to the feeding station in a certain time after the third lap they would be allowed to continue. They both made that time cutoff. But we all missed the fine print that said any swimmers on the course after 3 hours and 30 minutes would be pulled. Erica squeaked through that net and finished in 3:33. Susie was pulled right after that and we estimated she had around 700-800 meters left to swim – about 10 to 15 minutes max for her. Can you imagine all the training that went into this? She is no slouch and ranks up there in all of her swim meets and open water swims. To be denied just shy of the finish seems so unfair. Still, in our eyes, Susie was a finisher and we know she is mentally and physically an incredible warrior. So kudos to you Susie!

Wow, what a crew we took to Berryessa this year. Last year we had 8 Swymnuts compete at Lake Berryessa. This year? 20! Congratulations to all of them for a job well done. Coach Susie takes our “Toughest NUT” award as the only swimmer among us who did both the 2-mile swim and then the 1-mile swim. She was readying herself for the upcoming 10K swim at Lake Del Valle a week later. There were some phenomenal drops in time for our crew this year who have done this swim in the past

  • Coach Shari dropped :38 seconds off last year’s 1-mile time
  • Coach Cokie dropped 1 min from when she last swam this in 2007
  • Sue August dropped 1:36 from last year’s 1-mile
  • Lynn Forsey dropped 2:38 from last year’s 1-mile
  • Nance Rosencranz dropped an amazing 8 minutes from last year’s 1-mile

Spring Lake 2016 Collage

Congratulations to the four swimmers who competed in the first open water of the season, the Spring Lake 1-mile. Spring Lake is in Santa Rosa near Annadale State Park. While initially forecast to be lightning, thunder and rain, the conditions were actually quite nice and the water temp was balmy at 71 degrees.

Our four swimmers, Judy Ferguson, Nicole Cibellis, Gina Rus and Claudia Hermann swam well and they all finished within 18 seconds of each other. Amazing. Way to go ladies!

Full results: http://www.bigskyendurancesports.com/results2016/SPRINGLAKE_1MILE.htm. If you tap the “DIV” column you can see the results by age group.

Three of our swimmers competed in regular suits and Nicole swam in the wetsuit division. Here are there rankings:

One lone Swymnut went out to the USMS Spring Nationals held in Greensboro, NC April 28 to May 1, 2016. It isn’t easy being the lone representative for your team, but Mimi reached out, made friends with some other stragglers from California and ended up having a very good time. Her breaststroke was exceptional and she achieved new lifetime bests as well as team records in those swims (100 & 200 Breaststroke). Despite stiff competition, she was in the Top 15 in 4 of her 6 events. We are proud of you Mimi!

Too long in getting our official team results up from our Pacific Masters Champs held April 8-10 in Moraga. We braved rain, wind, grey skies and cold temps and still had a heck of a time! Kudos to all the great swims by all of our swimmers.

Here are some pictures of our Swymnuts in action at Champs. Be sure and see the embeddedPDF here with the official results. Wow, we had a ton of new team records set along with some lifetime best swims and National Qualifying Times. Great meet for a great team!

Three brave ladies competed in the Rinconada Meet in Palo Alto today. Weather was not optimum (cold, windy) so the muscles really never warm up. Despite that, there gals did great with a couple of personal bests in their age group, lifetime bests as a Masters swimmer, a couple of National Qualifying Times and even two more team records! Thanks for representing Jane, Erica and Mimi!

Three Swymnuts attended the CAL Aquatic Masters short course yards meet on March 7th at U.C. Berkeley. Jane came away with two lifetime bests and just missed a National Qualifying Time in her 50 Breast (NQT is 42.44), and Erica had a personal best in her current age group for the 200 IM (not something she swims often – great work Erica!). Another nice meet for our lady NUTS

Congrats to our 6 swimmers who competed in the Santa Rosa Flower Power meet this past weekend. It was a first time affair for Tyler who managed a solid 100 free and set a team record. Hiroe Bell enjoyed her first meet as a Swymnut and also set two new team records and narrowly missed out on National Qualifying Times. Mimi took 16 seconds off her 200 breast and wasn’t even winded (so we know she has an even faster time awaiting her). Anice swam 5 events landing first place in all. Cassandra and Jane rounded up the competition with very good swims for this first meet of the year.

Coach Marlon ran the show and videotaped all the races. I’ll update this page with the link to the races once they are down uploading. Meanwhile, here are the results for our Swymnut Masters
